Smart Protocols To Take When Using Thread Gages

Blog

Thread gages are very useful instruments when it comes to assessing pitches of fasteners, but you need to be careful with how you use them. These particular tips can help you avoid complications when they're needed for fastener analysis.

Inspect Gage if it Falls

You might be using a thread gage with different fasteners and then accidentally have it fall out of your hands. If this ever happens, then you want to inspect the gage carefully before trying to measure pitches of fasteners again. There could be slight damage that you need to assess with the grooves.

Thread gages are durable, but even slight imperfections with their grooves can create real issues using this tool moving forward. If there are imperfections with the grooves after this event, you'll want to take it out of rotation in favor of gages that are structurally sound.

Coat in Wax for Added Protection

You may already have storage methods for thread gages that you use often to measure fastener pitches. If you want to improve them even further, then you can purchase sealing wax and apply it to the threaded portion of the gage.

Then, even if the thread gages roll around in the storage compartment you're using, the threads will be totally protected. You don't have to worry about the threads bending or chipping off while your gages are in storage. Applying this sealing wax isn't that difficult, as long as you have some source of heat.

Utilize a Rust Preventative

If rust gets on your thread gages, they're not going to last for very long. The rust will eventually start breaking down the gage, regardless of what materials it's made out of. In order to keep this from happening, you should use a rust-preventative product on all of your thread gages.

These solutions often come in liquid form and thus are easy to apply to your gages. You'll just need to apply enough coats to give your thread gages enough protection from rust, especially if you have to store them in humid areas where rust is more probable.

Thread gages aren't that advanced in terms of their design, but you still have to know how to use and care for them over the years. You have access to a lot of amazing products and guides that make these instruments very easy to incorporate into your operations.
